Experts discussed approaches to appointing economic expertise in criminal proceedings
On October 23, 2025, a joint event was held in Kyiv by the Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law of the Ukrainian Bar Association and the Research Center for Independent Judicial Expertise of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on the topic of “Features of appointing economic expertise in criminal proceedings.”
The event was moderated by:
Yevhen Riyako, Deputy Chair of the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, Managing Partner at RIYAKO & PARTNERS Law Firm, Attorney at Law;
Stanislav Boris, Deputy Chairman of the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, Managing Partner at Vidar Law Firm.
Speakers:
Oleksandr Haponov, Head of the Research Department at the National Research Center for Economic and Social Studies, a specialist with over 25 years of experience in economic research;
Iryna Ped, Chair of the Ukrainian Bar Association's Commission on Forensic Expertise, Managing Partner at S&D Expert Group.
During the discussion, experts focused on a number of topical issues related to the appointment and conduct of economic expertise in criminal proceedings. In particular, they discussed typical difficulties faced by investigators, prosecutors, lawyers, and courts at the stage of determining the grounds and limits of expert examination. Special attention was paid to the correct formulation of questions to the expert, as this determines the completeness and objectivity of the conclusion.
In addition, the speakers shared their own experiences iin improving the quality of materials for economic expert examinations, drew attention to the need to involve specialists at the early stages of pre-trial investigation, and outlined the prospects for the development of expert activities in the context of the digitalization of justice.
