Marriage contracts without myths: UBA Committee holds expert discussion

On November 14, 2025, the UBA Committee on Civil, Family, and Inheritance Law held an online event titled “Marriage Contracts.”

Participants had the opportunity to discuss topical issues of legal regulation of marriage contracts, their relationship with other family law instruments, and practical aspects of their application in Ukraine and abroad.

The event was moderated by Olena Sibirtseva, Chair of the UBA Committee on Civil, Family and Inheritance Law, advisor at AGA Partners, attorney at law.

Leading experts and representatives of the judiciary took part in the discussion:

  • Olga Stupak, Judge of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court
  • Vasyl Krat, Judge of the Civil Cassation Court within the Supreme Court
  • Maryna Korniienko, Member of the Board of the UBA Committee on Civil, Family, and Inheritance Law, Lawyer at Asters, attorney at law

During the event, experts discussed a number of key topics, including:

  • features of concluding and executing a marriage contract with a foreign element;
  • comparison of a marriage contract and a contract on the division of marital property;
  • recommendations on choosing the optimal type of contract for regulating property relations between spouses;
  • regulation of maintenance of one of the spouses and children under the terms of a marriage contract;
  • the possibility of extending the effect of a marriage contract to property acquired prior to its conclusion;
  • an overview of foreign practices;
  • analysis of the Anti-Corruption Court's practice regarding marriage contracts;
  • debunking the three most common myths about marriage contracts.

The event brought together a wide audience of lawyers, attorneys, and law students, who actively participated in the discussions and asked questions to the speakers. Participants noted the high practical value of the event and the relevance of the issues raised.

The UBA Committee plans to continue holding similar educational events aimed at deepening the knowledge and professional development of lawyers in the field of family and civil law.
