The UBA representatives discussed the need for forensics reform with international experts

On Wednesday, July 10, a meeting was held between representatives of the UBA Secretariat, the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, the UBA Commission on Forensics, and international experts from the EU Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM) and the EU Project "Pravo-Justice." The participants discussed the necessity of reforming the field of forensics.

The UBA was represented by:

  • Viktoriia Krasnova, UBA Executive Director;
  • Viktoriia Motia, UBA Committees and Sections Manager;
  • Sergii Boiko, Member of the Board of the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, Counsel at VB PARTNERS;
  • Andrii Fortunenko, Member of the Board of the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, Partner at AVELLUM;
  • Stanislav Borys, Deputy Chair of the UBA Committee on Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, Managing Partner at VIDAR Law Firm;
  • Iryna Ped, Head of the UBA Commission on Forensics, Managing Partner at S&D Expert Group.

International experts who participated included:

  • Marko Muhonen, Senior Adviser on Forensics (Finland), EUAM;
  • Ievgen Chernikov, Prosecution, Financial and Organized Crime Officer (Ukraine), EUAM;
  • Paweł Rybicki, key international expert on forensics (Poland), EU Project “Pravo-Justice”;
  • Dariia Chupryna, EU Project “Pravo-Justice” (Ukraine).

At the beginning of the meeting, Viktoriia Krasnova thanked the international experts for their support of reforms in Ukraine and for providing professional assistance in this area. The experts, in turn, emphasized the role that the legal community plays in the development and implementation of reforms.

During the meeting, the lawyers assessed the current state of forensics and shared the problems they encounter when interacting with forensic experts. Based on this, the lawyers outlined the changes they believe are needed in the forensics system.

The participants also discussed the role of forensic experts in investigating corruption cases.
