At the session of the UN Human Rights Council, the UBA and IBAHRI made a statement on the situation in Ukraine
Inna Liniova, International Operations Advisor for the Ukrainian Bar Association, participated in a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 9, 2023. The session discussed issues of crimes and other violations of international law and human rights committed by Russia in Ukraine.
During the session, the UBA and the International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) issued a joint statement on the situation in Ukraine, in which they:
- condemned the widespread violations of human rights and International Humanitarian Law amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity in the course of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, also confirmed by the latest oral updates of the COI on Ukraine;
- condemned the widespread and systematic use of torture, incommunicado detention and enforced disappearances, in territories occupied by Russian armed forces, as also indicated in the COI’s finding, and confirmed by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture;
- expressed concern about the COI’s observations on allegations of genocide of Ukrainians and reiterated the call to action by Ukrainian legal community who urged the State Parties to the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to fully adhere to their obligations as outlined in Article 1 of the Convention;
- called on UN institutions and Member States through international cooperation to provide robust support to the Ukrainian justice system and assist in effective investigation and prosecution of international crimes, in accordance with fair trial guarantees.
