Mediators discussed how to stay connected to the profession while abroad

How can Ukrainian mediators who are currently abroad maintain their connection to the profession? What training opportunities are available to mediators in other countries? Answers to these and other questions were sought by the participants of the online event “Global Trends in Mediation. Changing Role of Lawyers”, which was held on August 2 by the UBA Mediation Committee.

The discussion was moderated by Olena Dryshliuk, Chair of the UBA Mediation Committee, attorney at law, certified family mediator. In her introductory remarks, she noted that many Ukrainian mediators who are now abroad have acquired their profession in Ukraine, so they have problems with maintaining their connection to the profession abroad.

The discussion was attended by:

  • Dr. Agne Tvaronaviciene, Professor at Mykolas Romeris University, Head of the Laboratory of Mediation and Sustainable Dispute Resolution, CEDR-certified mediator, Head of the LLM Mediation Program (Lithuania);
  • Yulia Radanova, Managing Partner at Legal Solutions Partners, international mediator and trainer, PhD in Mediation (Bulgaria);
  • Alina Sergeyeva, IMI-certified mediator, President of the Ukrainian National Section of GEMME Europe (EUROPEAN JUDGES GROUP FOR MEDIATION), Advisor to the Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Mediation, researcher at Mykolas Romeris University, judge of international mediation tournaments (Ukraine);
  • Kateryna Karmazina, Member of the Board of the UBA Mediation Committee, Member of the Board of the UBA Committee on Constitutional and Administrative Law, and Human Rights, Secretary of the Odesa Regional Bar Council.

The experts spoke about how a mediator can solve the problem of being a foreigner, how to find a job in the profession, get accredited, acquire new knowledge and experience, take part in international training programs, etc. The participants also shared their personal experience of solving the problem of being a mediator abroad.
